As the NFL season heats up, millions of fans across the country are managing their lineups with intense stress. Wrong decisions can lead to losses and losses are what puts someone in last place. Meaning they would have to undergo whatever cruel and creative punishment their league came up with. While winning a league trophy or cash prize is always the ultimate goal. In recent years some may say avoiding the loser’s punishment is even more important than winning it all. Fantasy Football culture has shifted, turning the last place penalty into something viral and funny for other people in the league.

People in fantasy leagues spend months coming up with big, funny, and very public ways to embarrass the person who ends up with the worst record. The punishment is designed to make the loser pay for every bad trade, draft pick, and decision they made along the way. Popular choices this year include things such as the “dog cage” where the loser of the league must lock themselves in a cage while their best friends pour whatever they want onto them. Condiments, expired food, sardines— the worst things you could imagine. This is also giving players motivation to try harder and not end up being the one in the metal cage.

Here at South Lyon Highschool, some of the students who participate in fantasy football feel the pressure to avoid being last. Aidan Harris said “Whoever loses gotta get in a dog cage with goggles and we pour anything on them with no limits.” So there has definitely been a crazy shift in recent fantasy football culture.
