There are many people who love Halloween but struggle stomaching horror. This can make it hard to find a festive movie that will give them those same spooky vibes without making them scared to go out at night. To remedy that, here are some suggestions from your fellow Lions for movies that will get you right into the spirit of Halloween without all the fear and gore.
Many people debate whether this movie is best for Halloween or Christmas, but sophomore Abigail Whitney suggested The Nightmare Before Christmas. Released in 1992 based off of a Tim Burton poem, The Nightmare Before Christmas takes place in Halloween Town. The movie follows Jack Skellington, the main character, who is known as the “King of Halloween Town”. Whitney, regarding why she enjoys this Halloween flick, said, “I think the music is really good.” The movie is overall kid friendly, with Whitney saying that the first time she watched the movie was, “Probably when I was like five or six.” With the movie’s charming stop-motion animation and catchy songs, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great, low-scare movie you can watch for the month of October.
Another fun, low-stakes movie to get you in the Halloween spirit is Girl vs. Monster. Starring Olivia Holt, Girl vs. Monster is a 2012 Disney movie that follows a young girl named Skylar Lewis as she learns that she is a monster hunter, and she must defeat her family’s personal monster, which feeds on their fear. Sophomore Amira Genson said she first watched the film “When I was six.” Reporting on what she liked so much about the movie, Genson said, “…there’s lots of songs…one of the songs is “Fearless”, and I grew up singing that song everyday on the bus, and it’s just very motivational.” This could be another fun watch to add to your list during the month of October. Girl vs. Monster is motivational and packed with fun songs.
This October, there are plenty of movies that will not make you squeamish while still helping you enjoy the spooky season, like Hocus Pocus and Halloween Town. Grab your boo baskets and a warm blanket Lions, because it’s time to get watching!
