Rejection with 2020 Presidential Candidates

2016’s Presidential race was a crazy one. There were two people in the running: one being experienced in politics, and the other being experienced in business and reality TV. There were, and still are, so many disputes based on who was and still is the more fit candidate for the presidency. Because of the election that is coming up next year, some states, who are more left sided, are passing certain laws to try to keep the current president off the ballot for the 2020 presidential election.

Rhode Island is currently arguing one such bill right now. According to The Hill, an online magazine, “The controversial measure would deny candidates for president and vice president a spot on the state ballot if they do not publicly release five of their most recent tax returns at least 50 days before the general election in 2020.” If this bill is passed, it will also apply to voting for electoral college members from that state as well. About 25 other states have also attempted to pass this bill through their Congress, the only problem, is that it could possibly be considered unconstitutional, and people have been calling it a ‘transparent political stunt’. There has been ongoing criticism about Donald Trump and his refusal to make his tax returns public, as he is the first president in decades to do so.

In the United States, the people have a voice, so asking around the school, multiple people were able to voice their views on this topic. Senior Bree Koski said, “Typically I’m not a huge politics girl, but I think that this law is a good idea in these states. No matter what position you’re in, whether just a regular citizen or the president, you should have to follow the same rules.” Another senior, Bella Cristen, agrees with Koski. “I think that if he isn’t releasing his tax returns, how could we trust him as a president? Obviously, this will affect the future ballots, but for the elections, I think that it is a good idea, so that everyone is equal.”

There is so much bias in this country and so many different views in our government, it would just be easier if everyone were able to realize that there are other views? But there will always be competition in our government, and now, different parties are doing something about it, to get their way. This may be a good idea, but it will change the way our government works forever.
