Every year around the holidays, the Angel Tree program provides a way for people in our community to give back and help families who might be struggling. Angel Trees are set up through businesses such as Walmart and Salvation Army. Each tree is decorated with paper angels, listing a gift request for a child who may not otherwise receive presents during the holiday season.
Anyone from students, to community members, and more can pick an angel from the tree, buy the gift listed, and return it to the collection point. These gifts are then delivered to the families just in time for the holidays. The program has been part of the community for decades and gives students a meaningful way to participate in charitable work. Many students say that participating helps them realize how even small acts of kindness can make a difference. Junior Emma Kleabir said, “It feels really good to give a gift to a kid who might not get anything this year. Knowing that what I do can actually make someone’s holiday better is really rewarding.”
Angel Trees also help teach students empathy and the importance of giving back. Schools often organize collection events or drives to encourage participation, making it easier for students and families to get involved. SLHS has had things such as book drives and food drives that give back to our local community. Students get the firsthand opportunity to see how generosity can change someone’s holiday. Senior Alina Plausiuk said, “Helping with Angel Tree is simple but also beneficial. It’s cool knowing you helped make someone’s Christmas.”
The program has grown over the years, reaching more children and families each year. Volunteers play a major role in sorting and delivering the gifts to ensure that every child receives what they asked for. Local organizations and schools rely on community support to make the program successful. Creators on TikTok have also been showing their support and participating in Angel Tree. Many students who participate return year after year because they enjoy seeing the impact of their efforts.
For students, participating in Angel Trees becomes more than just giving gifts. It allows them to engage with the community, develop compassion, and experience the joy of helping others. As the holidays approach, Angel Trees are a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference and that everyone can help spread kindness during the season. To join in, just stop by the Angel Tree at Walmart, grab a tag, and make a kid’s holiday way brighter.
