With fall finally underway, homecoming season is in the air. The stress of plans, what color dress you are going to wear, heels or tennis shoes, etc and what corsage to buy are all aspects of the homecoming weekend to consider. It can be the best night of your life, or the worst if anything goes wrong. Luckily, the students at SLHS have been having loads of fun with their homecoming proposals. Posters, candles, and stuffed animals are just a few of the approaches students have been using to ask their homecoming dates to the big dance. Since homecoming is here, let’s reflect on some posters, traditions, and fun SLHS students have during HOCO week.

Freshman Lily Koscielny got asked with a poster pertaining to the sport she plays, and the poster read: “You already light up the sideline, but will you light up my night at hoco?” The poster was in reference to her participation in the South Lyon Varsity Cheer team. Koscienly said she was very excited, and she already knew she was getting asked—hearing from her friends—but she was not sure exactly when. She said, “I was at home, then he texted me to come outside, and when I went outside he was just there with the poster.” She continued, “We’re going in a big group to get dinner and pictures, so I’m excited to be with all my friends. I think HOCO proposals are fun, I’m glad I got asked this year.” Showing someone you care by acknowledging their interests, likes, or hobbies can go a long way and can even score you a date to a school dance. They don’t have to be big gestures, although some people do put in a lot of effort. Students at SL have proven that a simple sign can be a huge gesture and please many students.

Although the proposals are fun, many other students are more excited for the festivities surrounding homecoming as compared to the dance. Junior Wes Honiss did participate in the homecoming signs tradition, and he said “I am most excited for the homecoming football game” but that he did not really care for getting dressed up and taking photos. Many opinions at SLHS are contradicting but that is what makes homecoming fun, there is an activity for everyone. Our school offers many events open to everyone, such as the pep assembly, the homecoming tailgate, the big game, and of course the dance itself.

Overall, homecoming includes many fun festivities. Whether you like the dance, the pep assembly, or the game, there is always something for everyone to do. Homecoming proposals can be a fun way to ask significant others or friends to join you for a fun night of dancing and partying with your peers.  But if that is not your style, you can always find something else just for you during homecoming week. Students are already planning for next year’s homecoming; a long process. Especially for those in student council. When asked about the decorating this year, senior Tori Hare commented “We have to get there very early to prepare, which is not the best but seeing the final product is worth it. I decorated a few of the pillars in the cafeteria and it was fun.”

Homecoming is a time of inclusion and celebration. School spirit is high, especially with the seniors winning the spirit trophy. With our football team remaining undefeated, the pep rally successfully preparing the students for the game, and the conclusion of the homecoming dance, it is safe to say homecoming was a good week here at SLHS.
