With the spring season coming up, it is getting to the time for spring cleaning. Spring cleaning for many can be a way to not only reset your home, but to also reset your mind. By decluttering and cleaning, it can make the home a cozier space, and also allows a new mindset to take root.
Many people have been saying that your room is a direct reflection of your mind, and in some cases it may be true. By just taking a look at someone’s bedroom, you could tell a lot about someone. If a person is stressed out and busy with little to no time on their hands, it may lead to a messy and cluttered living space. However, if someone tends to have a lot of free time, is organized, and is not easily stressed out or distracted, their room may be neater and more put together.
Cleaning up and re-organizing spaces in a home can be relaxing and even calming to some. By emptying out trash and freeing up previously covered space, it may allow people to be happier and much less worried about items piling up over time. Because a clean space allows for a positive impact on someone’s well being, it also may reduce stress, improve focus, and help someone feel a sense of control and accomplishment. According to Newport Healthcare, “The act of cleaning also requires us to slow down, which can offer a calming effect during overwhelming situations and help us explore and manage our emotions.” With having a neat and cleaner space, it may help our minds clear and start off with a clean slate which may allow people to have a better mindset and less stress.
When it comes to doing work, and focusing, having a messy space is not ideal. It leaves no room to get stuff out and ready to complete the work, but also by having too many items in someone’s field of vision has been proven to distract the brain’s processing capacity. Even if it is only a little bit, clearing away clutter allows the brain to focus on tasks and items one at a time, making it easier to concentrate and not be distracted.
A lot of people need stability in their lives to have an organized and healthy lifestyle. By keeping your space clean and in order, it can help to provide that sense of familiarity. To others though, it may be different. A lot of children and teens like to procrastinate cleaning and doing work, and a study in 2017 proved just that. Dr. Roeske of Northport Healthcare described, “When there is order and structure to our outer environment, it can help us feel more able to manage some of the internal feeling states and worlds.” By procrastinating and letting items pile up, it can lead to someone beginning to feel overwhelmed, and may cause a lower quality of life.
By organizing and keeping your space clean, it not only allows you to clean and reset your mind, but it also may allow you to be less stressed out and overwhelmed. If you do not procrastinate and maintain a neat space, it will lead to a positive outlook on life and a better mindset.
