On Sept. 10, Dave Grohl admitted in a statement on his Instagram that he had cheated on his wife, and subsequently had a daughter outside of his current marriage. Fans were outraged at the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer, not only for cheating on his wife, but also betraying the trust of his three children. Grohl married actress Jordyn Blum in 2003 and had three daughters with her: Violet, 18; Harper; 15; and Ophelia, 10. Grohl shared the statement with his 1.4 million followers on Instagram, but he did not identify the mother of the baby. Since then, the comments on the post have been disabled. In the statement, Grohl announced that he had “recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage,” and that he “plans to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.” A week after the statement was released, however, Blum was spotted without her wedding ring, and Grohl was spotted with a bare finger as he ran errands on his own.
This is not Grohl’s first bit of relationship drama in the public eye, as this is his second marriage in which he has stepped outside the boundaries of it. First was with Jennifer Leigh Youngblood, whom he married in 1994. “When I first met my wife, we went out on a few dates, and I decided that I wasn’t ready for a serious relationship, so I just stopped calling,” Grohl told Elle magazine in 2007. “After three months, I had a revelation and called her back.” In 1997, the couple finalized their divorce after Grohl’s admission to infidelity.
Tina Basich, a snowboarder and professional athlete, dated Grohl for two years in the early 1990s. Basich stated in her 2003 memoir Pretty Good for a Girl: The Autobiography of a Snowboarding Pioneer that Grohl was seeing another woman during their relationship. “I don’t know how anyone in his profession can have a normal relationship with a girlfriend…or two, as it turned out,” she wrote. “I found out secondhand, through the grapevine, when it seemed like everyone else in the world knew about it but me.” Basich continued on, writing that she never got any details from Grohl, and after a five minute phone call, the two split.
After the post went viral, Grohl’s two oldest daughters deleted their social media accounts. Neither Grohl nor Blum have expressed any plans of separation or divorce, and neither have directly come out since the statement was released. However, The Foo Fighters did pull out of their scheduled appearance at the Soundside Music Festival which was set for Sunday, Sept. 29. The lack of news from either of them has led to much speculation amongst fans of the singer, many believing that they will simply stay together for the sake of their children, whereas other—more longtime fans—have seen this exact same story play out twice before in the past. With still no statement, these theories remain speculations, and what the outcome will be, fans have no idea.
