SLHS had some new and improved advancements or is still working on new things over the past couple of years: a new library, a new pool, and an update to the cafeteria. Students are excited to see these new additions and advancements to our school’s facade.

As students and staff may have seen, the school media center has been under construction and should be available for use in late November. The librarian, Mrs. Jackie Cope said, “The new media center will have a more practical layout than the old one. The large group meeting area will be on the south side of the media center instead of in the middle. The circulation desk will be a bit smaller and more centrally located. There will be a flowing walkway between both doorways and lots of comfortable seating with nearby charging for devices. [And] will be display cases along the bank of windows near the main office to showcase student work.” In the meantime, there is a temporary library in the B wing, and also the G wing, as we are waiting very patiently for the new, exciting library.

Many students are excited for the new library, especially sophomore Anabelle Mangan, “I love to check books out and read, so I am definitely excited to be able to do that again!” Yes, we are able to check out books now, but can we all agree it feels better when you are in an actual library?

For the past couple of years, the pool has been under construction. The construction started around the summer of 2023, hoping to build a better pool. Health and P.E. teacher Mr. Erich Stephenson said, “I believe the pool construction will be done at the end of the school year (around July 2025). This aquatic center will have a regulation-size pool and allow for our school to host swim meets. Our old pool was not regulation size so it was used for practices only. A cool new feature of the aquatic center will be the warm pool that is only a few feet deep. This will be for beginner swimmers or disabled individuals.” Our SLHS swimmers are in need of a pool. The swim and dive teams have been waiting very patiently over the years to have their own pool. Currently, they practice at South Lyon East High School, so they are looking forward to coming back to practice at SLHS. Sophomore and swimmer Adrianna Ferrell said, “I’m excited to have morning practices there instead of at East, and to practice right after school.”

As of the beginning of this year, we have a newly updated cafeteria. The new cafeteria offers the ability for organized lines which are more efficient, and there are more lunch options rather than last year only having two main meal lunches and smaller lunch options, like bagged/yogurt lunch. It is better to have pizza as an option every day and other options on top of that. Sophomore Marissa Little said, “It’s more organized and it just kind of feels more spacious. And that’s what I like because last year it kind of felt really crowded. And so like, improved organization.” The new cafeteria definitely feels more spacious because of the new organized lines.

SLHS is excited about the new advancements to the school. Each bond financed update will allow students and staff to grow in their pride as our facilities become more accessible, user- friendly, and after a much needed facelift to well-used areas of the school.
