In the ever-evolving prospect of education, South Lyon High School plays a pivotal role in preparing students for the challenges of the future. There are plenty of courses offered at South Lyon like math, science, and English, which form a foundation of academic knowledge. However, there is a large significance that our electives play in shaping well-rounded individuals that cannot be overstated.

Unique opportunities are available for students to explore a variety of subjects beyond the traditional curriculum. From a wide variety of arts such as television production classes, yearbook, drama, fundamentals of art, ceramics, drawing, painting, jewelry design, metalsmithing techniques, photography, and sculpture, electives provide a platform for students to discover and nurture their passions as opposed to what is mandated for curriculum. This diversity of subjects and interests not only enhances creativity but also promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential in today’s dynamic world.

One of the key advantages of electives is the ability to cater to individual interests and learning styles. Only some students thrive in the same academic environment, and electives allow for a more personalized learning experience. Whether a student is interested in fitness courses such as lifetime sports and fitness, team sports, and conditioning, or music classes such as choir, piano lab, band, wind ensemble, chamber choir, and even our own Lyon Singers class, electives provide an avenue for them to delve into areas that resonate with their unique strengths and interests. In the professional sphere, success is often attributed not only to academic knowledge but also to a diverse skill set and a well-rounded personality.

Electives can also offer students the chance to develop practical, hands-on skills that can be applied in real-world scenarios. Courses in entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, desktop publishing, computer science, digital imaging multimedia computing, personal finance, MS user, and marketing operations all foster qualities that are valuable in the workplace, helping students transition seamlessly from the classroom to their future careers.“I am glad that I took personal finance because it involves learning things about the real world and money that you don’t usually get taught in school. And just by taking this class, it can get some kids ahead in life with that basic knowledge,” junior Jack Willams said. Aside from business and computer classes, design and technology courses offered things such as architectural design, engineering projects, modern technologies, robotics and automation, and technical drawing.

Electives offered at South Lyon also delve into cultural studies and foreign languages such as Spanish, German, Japanese, and Chinese. These courses contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the world, creating cultural competence and empathy among students, ”going to Europe isn’t new to me, but this was a whole new game. The trip was amazing and truly beautiful. Thankfully, an amazing four years in Germany helped me get around Germany.” Senior Stevan Bojicic said. In an era of increasing globalization, these qualities are advantageous and essential for blooming harmonious relationships in an interconnected global society.

Beyond individual growth, electives also play a vital role in building a sense of community within South Lyon. “Yearbook was my elective, and it’s been fun getting to know everyone and working together to create a keepsake of our high school years. It’s a lot of work but very rewarding,” sophomore Ava Shelburne said. Collaborative projects, performances, and exhibitions allow students to work together, building teamwork and communication skills. Some students may feel less successful in traditional classrooms, which can often lead to an overwhelming sense of loneliness or struggle. But with a creative outlet, students can unwind and socialize with others who share common interests. This sense of belonging contributes to a positive school environment where students feel supported and engaged in their learning journey.

The inclusion of electives offered in our curriculum is a cornerstone in providing students with a well-rounded education. The benefits extend far beyond the classroom, shaping individuals who are not only academically proficient but also equipped with the diverse skills and perspectives necessary for success in the ever-changing landscape of the 21st century. As education continues to recognize the importance of holistic education, the role of electives in shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow cannot be overstated.
