From R&B to heavy metal, there are different genres of music for everyone, and because of the rise of social media, new artists are popping up everywhere. While some may be quick to dismiss social media artists, there are a few who deserve more recognition. In this article, you will discover some up-and-coming artists, and some more undercover artists in quite a few different genres. Who knows, maybe you will find one you like.
Cheap Perfume: Cheap Perfume can only be classified as a female rage rock band. Heavily inspired by the 90s Riot Grrrl movement and bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, the members of the Colorado femme-core band have been masters at trashing the patriarchy for the past six years, taking shots at former president Donald Trump and encouraging the anti-fascist movement. Their most streamed song, “It’s Okay to Punch Nazis” features some notable lyrics: “When we got complacent/in defending our rights/the Nazis changed their name/now they’re called the alt-right.”
RobxRemmy: RobxRemmy is an R&B and rap duo from our very own South Lyon. So far they have released one album, Off The Grid, and three EPs, Summer Pack, Downtown, and Quick. The duo also plans to release a new album sometime in early 2024. “Each drop we have released includes a variety of genres and styles to reach as many people as possible with our label RR productions,” they said.
Ricky Jamaraz: “Wait, sorry I zoned out what did you just say? Did you just call me pretty? You must be mistaken or talking to a mirror.” These are lyrics from one of Jamaraz’s newest releases “Microwave.” Jamaraz is an indie bedroom pop artist from the UK. “Most people think my ‘Microwave’ is just a bit of a not-serious, joke song, like it doesn’t have a meaning. And to some people it doesn’t mean anything, it’s just crazy and random and that’s why I think it popped off like it did, the true meaning is hidden so deeply that people automatically can’t be bothered to figure it out so they assign their own meaning to it,” Jamaraz said. Many people have compared his music to popular streamers, YouTubers, and musicians Wilbur Soot and James Marriot.
RINI: Also known as Justerini Sandoval, RINI is a Filipino-Australian R&B artist. “Music started as a hobby, I just loved playing guitar when I was younger and then it turned into me doing song covers on YouTube and eventually started writing my own music,” Sandoval said. Many listeners are drawn in by his smooth, seductive voice in his favorite song “Aphrodite.”
Polyphia: It is difficult to categorize Polyphia; originally, they are a rock and roll band from all across the U.S., but they dabble in so many different genres that it makes them hard to place. Notable examples include their J-Pop song with Sophia Black, “ABC,” and their instrumental track, “Playing God.” Tim Henson is the lead guitarist and is widely praised in the rock community for his intricate riffs and original sounds. “We can do whatever we want, that’s all I know.” Henson stated in an interview with MusicRadar.
Blossoms: Blossoms is an English indie rock band from Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. Formed in 2013, the band features Tom Ogden with lead vocals and guitar, Charlie Salt on bass, Josh Dewhurst on lead guitar and percussion, Joe Donovan on drums, and Myles Kellock playing the keys. Their fan-favorite song is “Charlemagne”: “And the river always flows, so if you go I will know/By the way, my Charlemagne.”
Of course, there are many more bedroom pop artists and indie punk bands that deserve to be featured, The internet is a vast and endless space, and a great way to discover new artists. Consider sharing your favorite lesser-known artists with the world. After all, if you are listening to them, they must deserve some clout, right?
