The pink out football game is important to both the students and families in South Lyon. The annual pink out game is when South Lyon and South Lyon East play each other in football, and was on Friday, Oct. 20 this year. Junior Lauren MacDonald said, “It’s a fun time to get involved with my friends and the game.” Every year, both schools get decked out and pack the opposing student sections with pink. This is a town tradition that South Lyon carries out to honor those in the community who suffer, or have suffered, from this type of cancer.

Despite the longevity of this tradition dating back at least a decade, there were rumors that East would not wear pink this year, and instead adhere to a “Welcome to the Jungle” theme. This theme is used by SLHS for their first football game of the season each year, and East students believed mocking their rivals would be a funny stunt. Junior Anna Tsitinis said, “Everyone should have a chance to participate, and should be strongly encouraged across both schools.” Breast cancer is a very serious illness that affects thousands of people. It takes the lives of over 42,000 women die a year from breast cancer. Many people in the community have lost family members and friends to breast cancer, which is why this tradition is so valued.

The pink out game has been a tradition at South Lyon for over a decade, and is a tradition that the city hopes to honor for years to come. For those at the game who have beat breast cancer, lost a relative or friend to the disease, or are even battling cancer themselves, seeing the whole town coming together to raise awareness is a nice reminder of support. While it is unfortunate that SLHS lost the game, SLEHS ended up wearing pink to support breast cancer, which was a considerable win to all.
